How to perform Network testing for a trading server?

December 22, 2024 by AFT

Network testing for a trading server requires a rigorous approach to ensure the lowest latency and highest reliability. Here’s a breakdown of the gold standard in testing methodologies and tools:

1. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Latency: This is the most critical metric. Measure round-trip time (RTT) in microseconds (µs) for order submission and market data updates. Aim for consistently low latency with minimal jitter (variation in latency).
  • Jitter: Variations in latency can disrupt order execution timing. Measure jitter to identify inconsistencies in network performance.
  • Packet Loss: Lost packets can lead to missed orders or inaccurate market data. Measure packet loss as a percentage of total packets sent.
  • Throughput: Ensure sufficient bandwidth for peak trading volumes. Measure throughput in megabits or gigabits per second (Mbps or Gbps).
  • Error Rate: Monitor for network errors that can disrupt trading activity. Measure errors per second or as a percentage of total traffic.

2. Testing Tools & Techniques

  • Network Simulation Tools:
    • Hardware Simulators: Expensive but offer the most realistic testing environment. Examples include Spirent TestCenter and Ixia IxNetwork.
    • Software Simulators: More affordable and flexible. Examples include Packet Tracer, GNS3, and OPNET Modeler.
  • Dedicated Testing Environment: Replicate your production environment as closely as possible for accurate results. This includes network hardware, server configurations, and market data feeds.
  • Load Testing: Simulate peak trading conditions with high message rates and order volumes. Tools like LoadRunner or JMeter can be used.
  • Stress Testing: Push the network beyond its limits to identify breaking points and bottlenecks.
  • Failover Testing: Simulate network failures (e.g., link or switch failure) to verify redundancy and failover mechanisms.
  • Monitoring Tools: Use real-time network monitoring tools to identify performance issues during testing. Examples include SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor and PRTG Network Monitor.

3. Best Practices

  • Baseline Testing: Establish a performance baseline in a controlled environment.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Continuously monitor network performance during testing and in production.
  • Automated Testing: Automate tests to ensure consistency and repeatability.
  • Documentation: Thoroughly document test procedures, results, and analysis.

4. Specialized Considerations for Trading Servers

  • Co-location: If your server is co-located with an exchange, focus on testing connectivity to the exchange’s network.
  • Market Data Feeds: Test the performance of your market data feeds with tools like those from Vela Trading Technologies or Refinitiv.
  • Order Routing: Test the entire order routing path, from your trading application to the exchange and back.
  • Time Synchronization: Ensure accurate time synchronization using NTP (Network Time Protocol) servers.

5. Example Test Scenarios:

  • Latency under peak load: Simulate high message rates and order volumes to measure latency under stress.
  • Packet loss during market volatility: Simulate a period of high market volatility with rapidly changing prices to measure packet loss.
  • Failover to backup network link: Simulate a primary network link failure to verify failover to a backup link.

By following these guidelines, you can establish a gold standard for network testing your trading server, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and successful trading outcomes.

Note: We performed many of the above tests when selecting QuantVPS as our preferred Trading Server providers.

Unveiling the Path to Success hybrid automated day trading

November 28, 2024 by Tom Leeson

Key Questions Every Trader Should Ask

  1. What is your capital size? Your starting capital plays a crucial role in determining position sizing, risk management, and overall strategy feasibility.
  2. What is your risk percentage? Define a clear risk percentage per trade or portfolio, e.g., 1-2%. This ensures you survive losing streaks and avoid catastrophic drawdowns.
  3. What system and rules are you using?
    • Trade Frequency: Are you taking 1-2 trades a week or several trades daily?
    • Win Rate: What percentage of your trades are winners?
    • Risk-Reward Ratio: How much are you risking for every unit of potential profit?
    • Risk of Ruin: Have you assessed the likelihood of blowing up your account?
    • Drawdown vs. Net Profit: Can you stomach the drawdowns required to achieve your profit goals?
  4. What are your commission fees? Costs, including commissions and slippage, significantly impact profitability, especially for high-frequency traders.
  5. Are you trading with prop firm capital or personal funds? Prop trading comes with constraints like daily loss limits and stricter risk rules. Real-money trading requires a cushion for slippage and psychological endurance.

Hybrid vs. Fully Automated Trading

Hybrid trading, a blend of automation and manual oversight, adapts to market conditions in ways machines cannot replicate. While fully automated systems can deliver results like 100% in 3 months or 250% annually, they come with high drawdowns and emotional detachment.

In contrast, hybrid trading offers:

  • Personalized decision-making.
  • Enhanced control over drawdowns.
  • A balance between consistency and adaptability.

Results from Our VIP Group

Real traders, real stats—our community showcases diverse outcomes:

  • $15,000 in a single day.
  • $1,000 consistently per week and more.
  • Mixed days/weeks/months of wins and losses.

The key takeaway? Focus on your journey rather than comparing yourself to others. The real question is: Can you master the method and technology to fit your trading style?

Winning Mindset: A Structured Path

  1. Commitment to Learning: Traders in our VIP group prioritize education over quick wins.
  2. Process Over Stats: Focusing on improving your execution and decision-making ultimately leads to consistent results.
  3. Quality Over Quantity: Only 20% of retail traders succeed, but our structured approach filters for the top winning mindset committed traders.
  4. High Trading IQ Community: Low attrition rates, no noise or nonsense, no one-eye kings in the valley of the blind, trader group success peaks over 66% per month.

Performance Expectations

  • Gold Standard: >25% monthly returns (akin to Goldman Sachs-level trading).
  • Great Returns: 5-10% per month for a retail trader.
  • Good Performance: Breaking even with <10% monthly drawdown.

Cutting-edge Technology and AI

We pioneered Hybrid Automated Trading with tools that maximize control and minimize drawdowns.

The Trading Journey

Think of trading like mastering a Formula 1 car. The Ferrari’s lap time is irrelevant if you’re not trained to handle its power. Consistent success requires thousands of hours of chart time, trade plan rules, stats, and a diary, learning from every step of the journey.

We provide the tools and framework to build winners, but the final results depend on your dedication.

Why Choose Us?

  • Real Trading, No Gimmicks: No retail tricks or stat manipulation.
  • High IQ Community: Learn alongside serious traders focused on growth.

Tech pivotal and elections pending industrial revolution no 3

November 4, 2024 by Tom Leeson

Nasdaq Futures Monthly Fibonacci Grid Analysis

Nasdaq Futures monthly Fibonacci grid – pivotal technical point aligning with the upcoming elections

1. Technical Setup for NQ

  • Current Support Levels: The NQ is testing support near the 100-day and 200-day moving averages, a crucial point as it approaches November session lows. A breakdown here could indicate a broader bearish trend, while a bounce could trigger a retest of recent highs.
  • Potential Market Bounce: If support holds, a short-term bullish opportunity could arise as the NQ re-approaches recent highs. Failure at this level may signal a cautious or bearish stance, particularly if it aligns with broader tech sentiment.
  • This chart was created using AFT8 for NinjaTrader Desktop. The daily chart template includes MSFG, Swing Pivots, and daily benchmarks, available here for free for sim and NT demo trading.

2. Sector Dependencies and Earnings

  • Tech Dominance and Innovation: Key growth drivers like AI, nuclear tech, and biotech continue to dominate. Earnings in these areas, particularly AI and automation, may boost revenue and efficiencies while potentially reducing workforce overheads.
  • Biotech’s Role: Biotech is expected to drive future gains alongside tech and AI, especially with innovations in healthcare automation and pharmaceuticals.
  • Earnings Quality: A reliance on fiscal strategies and speculative returns could introduce volatility, particularly affecting growth-focused sectors like small caps.

3. Macro-Economic Indicators

  • Non-Farm Payrolls & Purchasing Power: Recent NFP data suggests a decline in real purchasing power for both supervisory and non-supervisory workers, potentially impacting consumer-driven tech and retail sectors.
  • Federal Reserve Decisions: With the 13-week Treasury Bill yield at 4.43%, slightly below the 4.5% threshold, a 25 bps rate cut is expected in the November 7 Fed meeting, possibly boosting sentiment in tech and growth assets.
  • Future of Tech Growth: The world stands on the edge of a tech-driven frontier, with sectors like AI, Automation, and Biotech poised to lead. The U.S. must decide whether to spearhead these advancements or risk losing ground to global competitors.

4. Political Climate and Implications for Corporates

  • Election Scenarios: Analyzing potential impacts without political bias:
    • Democratic Policies: Increased spending on non-revenue-generating projects could raise corporate taxes, potentially affecting GDP if growth investments are not prioritized domestically.
    • Pro-Business Stance of Trump: Lower taxes and incentives may retain more businesses within the U.S., fostering conditions favorable for large-cap and tech stocks.
    • Expected volatility may lead to a market pattern similar to 2016’s seasonal movements.

5. Banking Lobbies & the Industrial Revolution

  • With the banking lobby capitalizing on elevated mortgage rates, a reduction in rates could spur a shift of funds from bonds and money markets to equities, especially ETFs.
  • Reduced mortgage and bank lending rates could stimulate growth, supporting GDP and reducing failures tied to high rates.

6. Market Strategy and Trade Opportunities

  • Market Characteristics: High price levels suggest favorable trading ranges even in corrections. Institutional buying on retracements supports medium-term opportunities, particularly within the tech sector.
  • ETFs & Shorting Mechanisms: Long-only ETFs dominate volume, signaling buying opportunities during dips. Inverse ETFs may serve as short-hedging tools, though the market remains inclined towards “buying the dip.”

Potential Strategies

  • Short to Medium-Term Plays: Monthly session opens and weekly levels serve as key indicators for high-probability trades within day-trading alignments.
  • Market Bias: A medium- to long-term bullish bias with periods of volatility, creating opportunities in buying dips or selling failed highs.

Time cycles are critical in trading indices futures

August 27, 2024 by AFT

Time Cycles in Trading

Time cycles are critical in trading, especially in indices futures, as they help traders anticipate periods of increased activity, potential reversals, and significant price movements. The ATS Discord trading groups provide time cycles in pre-session summaries and real-time notifications for traders to stay ahead of the curve.

Common Time Cycles Observed by Traders

1. Opening and Closing Sessions

Market Open (9:30 AM ET): The market open is one of the most active times of the day, often marked by significant volatility as traders react to overnight news, economic data, and other pre-market developments. Opening gaps, breakouts, and sharp reversals are common during this period.

Market Close (4:00 PM ET): The last hour of trading, often called the “power hour,” can see a surge in activity as traders finalize their positions for the day. This period is particularly important for institutional traders and can lead to strong trends or reversals.

2. Mid-Morning Reversal (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM ET)

10:00 AM Reversal Time (10 AM Jiggle): Often, the market makes its first significant move of the day between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM ET. By 10:00 AM, traders often witness a reversal or continuation of the initial trend. Economic data releases, such as home sales, consumer sentiment, or manufacturing data, often occur around 10:00 AM, influencing market direction.

11:00 AM Transition: Around 11:00 AM, the market might consolidate or begin to lose momentum as traders start preparing for the lunchtime lull.

3. End-of-Session Squaring (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM ET)

3:00 PM ET Reactions: This is another critical time when traders start positioning themselves for the close. Volume often increases as traders who have held positions throughout the day make decisions on whether to hold overnight or close out.

3:30 PM ET Ramp-Up: The final 30 minutes can be very volatile, with large institutional orders coming in, leading to significant price swings.

4. FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) Announcements

2:00 PM ET (FOMC Days): On days when the Federal Reserve announces interest rate decisions, the market often remains relatively quiet until 2:00 PM ET when the announcement is made. After the release, there can be extreme volatility, followed by the Fed Chair’s press conference.

5. European Market Open (3:00 AM – 5:00 AM ET)

London Open (3:00 AM – 4:00 AM ET): The London market open is significant because it often brings a wave of liquidity into the market, especially in currency pairs and indices futures tied to European and US markets.

Overlap with Asia and US Pre-Market: The period between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM ET sees overlapping trading sessions between Europe and the end of the Asian trading day. This overlap can lead to increased volatility and trend formation.

6. Asia Market Sessions (7:00 PM – 3:00 AM ET)

Tokyo Open (7:00 PM – 9:00 PM ET): The Tokyo session can influence futures trading, especially in currencies and commodities. It is less volatile than the European and US sessions but still important for setting the tone for the day.

Australia and New Zealand Open: Before the Tokyo market, the Sydney and Wellington sessions open, marking the start of the global trading day. These markets can have a minor influence on futures trading, especially commodities like gold and oil.

7. Weekly Cycles

Monday Opening: Mondays can be unpredictable as traders digest news from the weekend. The market might gap up or down based on weekend developments.

Friday Close: Fridays often see traders closing positions ahead of the weekend, leading to increased volatility, particularly in the final hours of the trading day.

8. Monthly and Quarterly Cycles

End of the Month (EOM) Rebalancing: Institutional investors often rebalance portfolios at the end of the month, leading to increased volume and potential price swings.

End of the Quarter (EOQ) Reporting: The end of the quarter can see significant rebalancing and window dressing by fund managers, affecting indices futures and other financial instruments.

9. Economic Data Release Times

Non-Farm Payrolls (First Friday of Every Month, 8:30 AM ET): One of the most anticipated data releases, the Non-Farm Payrolls report can cause significant market moves, particularly in the first few minutes after its release.

CPI and PPI Reports: Inflation data like the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) also come out at 8:30 AM ET and can influence market direction.

10. Holiday Seasonality

Pre-Holiday Rallies: Markets often experience a rally before major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, a phenomenon known as the “Santa Claus Rally.”

Post-Holiday Sessions: The day after a major holiday can be quieter, but it may also bring volatility as traders return to the market.

How to Use Time Cycles in Trading

These time cycles are not rules but rather observed patterns that can help in planning trades and understanding market behavior. Successful traders often incorporate these cycles into their broader strategies, considering them alongside technical and fundamental analysis.
